In an inspiring tale of ambition and innovation, Adam Howe, a final-year mechanical engineering student, transformed a standard Yamaha YZF-R3 into a formidable competitor at the 2025 Speed Week at Lake Gairdner, South Australia. What began as a university project quickly evolved into a quest for glory as Adam aimed to secure a land-speed record in the challenging 350cc Modified Partial Streamlined Blown Gas (MPS-BG) class.
The Genesis of a Dream
Adam’s journey commenced at Trooper Lu’s Garage in Liverpool, where he first dyno-tested the stock YZF-R3, discovering its baseline power output of 36.1 horsepower (26.5 kW). With a tiny turbocharger in hand and a dedicated team, including Dr. Ali Zare from Deakin University and Ben Shaw from Extreme Creations, Adam embarked on a mission to enhance the bike’s performance. The objective was clear: push the learner-approved motorcycle to its limits and achieve a target speed of 136 mph (220 km/h).
Overcoming Challenges
As Adam delved deeper into the project, he faced numerous hurdles, including an initial failure to generate boost from the turbocharged engine. Sleepless nights were spent diagnosing issues until a breakthrough arrived on dyno day, where adjustments led to a significant increase in power, reaching 59.7 horsepower (44 kW)—almost double the stock output.
With the turbo system now functioning optimally, Adam’s focus shifted to fine-tuning the bike for the rigours of Speed Week. He meticulously adjusted gearing, ensured stability at high speeds, and made the necessary safety modifications. The combination of relentless testing and a passion for speed set the stage for an exhilarating week ahead.
Speed Week: The Realisation of a Dream
From March 3-8, 2025, Adam and his turbocharged YZF-R3 took to the salt flats. Despite challenging conditions, including temperatures soaring to nearly 40°C, Adam and his support team—comprised of family and friends—worked tirelessly to prepare for the record attempt. The culmination of their efforts resulted in an incredible achievement: Adam secured a new Australian land-speed record of 111.45 mph (179.36 km/h).
Reflecting on the experience, Adam shared his excitement, stating, “The week flew by! Despite many challenges along the way, we achieved our goal and set a record with our turbocharged Yamaha YZF-R3. We were among the few who successfully set a record this year—what a fantastic outcome for our first visit to the salt!”
Lessons Learned and Future Aspirations
While Adam’s achievement was monumental, he acknowledged that there was room for improvement. He faced limitations with the bike’s fuelling and gearing, which impacted performance at high revs. He plans to return in 2026 with a purpose-built engine that includes bigger injectors and stronger components to maximise power and boost. His target? An ambitious 125 mph (201.16 km/h).
