Motorcycle Tyres: When to Replace Them and How to Choose
Your tyres are the only thing connecting your motorcycle to the road, so keeping them in good condition is one of the most important things you can do for safety. Here’s how to know when to replace them and how to choose the right ones.
When to replace your motorcycle tyres
- Tread depth – in NSW the legal minimum is 1.5mm, but grip drops well before that, especially in the wet.
- Age – rubber hardens over time; many riders replace tyres around every five years regardless of tread.
- Damage – cracking, perishing, cuts, bulges or a repaired puncture are all reasons to replace.
- Uneven wear – squared-off rear tyres or worn edges change how the bike handles.
How to choose the right tyres
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall (for example 180/55 ZR17) and listed in your owner’s manual. Beyond size, match the tyre to your riding – sport, touring, commuting or off-road all have different compounds and tread patterns. If you’re not sure, give us your bike’s make, model and year and we’ll sort the right tyres for you.
